<a href="#comment-9472" rel="nofollow">@Sariah Ryland</a>
They have a 'bag your dog's poo' law over here too, but I think since it's slightly off the main road (on a footpath through fields) the dog owners think no one will notice or care. If ever I needed a reason not to have a dog, having to pick up its effluence comes pretty high on the list. I've never been a dog person, probably because when I was a kid, every time we had a dog and I became attached I'd invariably come home from school to find mother had taken it to the pound or given it away without any prior notice. The trauma has served me well; just think of all the money I've saved on dog food and dog toys over the years! (Sometimes one has to dig for the silver lining, but its there.)

And thanks for the luck! Hopefully I'll finish a book soon and hopefully it'll make you laugh! :)

Hurrah for Queenslanders (Australia) where you are required to take bags with you when you venture out with a dog. I have enjoyed not having to watch where I and the kids stand at parks - though there is always an occasional person who feels that they are above the law!
Hope you are feeling well soon and don't feel bad - my vacumn cleaner broke a year ago and I still haven't gotten it fixed - thankfully we only have carpet in the bedrooms.
Also good luck with the book .... I am looking forward to it coming out.

<a href="#comment-9402" rel="nofollow">@Victoria</a>
Thanks for your moral support. It's much appreciated! I've tried reminding my characters about the delete button, but they know they have the upper hand. I think I have to delete 10,000 words of Once Upon a Wager (three whole chapters). I don't know if they're right which means they're probably wrong.

I think I need to stop beating my head against another wall and bite the bullet. Today I've been working on Dancing the Maypole doing some rewriting and psyching myself up for chapter 27. I should just start it...if the characters spit in my eye...better spit than a rock. I SO want to be finished with these stories, but maybe I've been waiting for some missing pieces of the puzzle...may they fall out of the sky onto my desk soon.

PS the Goblin was on holiday this past week and I did get some lovely shots...I'll share some in a few days. :) I got my brain cooked at the beach. I had sun cream in the car and then forgot to put it on. That was dumb. I think I'm still recovering. I keep dreaming about chickens. It could be worse!

I also enjoy reading your blog, looking at the pictures you take, (Goblin's pics too). When you and your characters settle your differences,(Goblin not included)it will turn out just great. You all just need to come to an understanding. You direct, they act and if one of them has a problem, ask them what they suggest and after mulling it over remind them of the delete button on your p.c. Thanks, Victoria

<a href="#comment-9399" rel="nofollow">@Stan Marston</a>
I knew it was a house in decline. That's one of the reasons I wanted to see it. I assure you my mind wasn't remotely closed. I expected and wanted to see lots of old junk. My comments stem from how I experienced the atmosphere in the house. I'm glad I went, but as I commented in my post the house really did feel to me as if it had been cast under a bad spell (and this had nothing to do with the fact it was owned by The National Trust).

And as you can see from some of my photos I did enjoy the gardens. :)

Just a follow up on my previous post,I think you may have possibly missed the whole point of Calke Abbey ie it is meant to be a "house in decline" and should be visited with this in mind,it is a wonderful old house and I am sure by the sound of things you may have not seen some of the rooms eg the library for one, also what about the gardens and the rest of the grounds, deer park bluebell woods and more, why not visit again with a more open mind?

<a href="#comment-9397" rel="nofollow">@Sally Irvine</a>
There seems to be a social malaise in most Western Cultures that encourages people to play the blame game or exonerate victim-hood. People who step into that trap rarely come out...they live their lives blaming other people for whatever circumstances they find themselves in. Victim-hood is an emotional black hole that sucks away time and energy. Instead of living their lives, they just react to other people's choices. How sad!

I highly recommend one of the books on The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman...he does one that focuses on children. It's so simple...if we can figure out how other people need to be loved...we can make them feel loved. Loving others in our love language never works unless the other person shares the same love language. He's broken it down into five main groups, though most people have their own unique dialect. Simple and brilliant. I wish I'd seen it!

Hi Cari, This is certainly something to reflect (and act) on to make sure I'm understanding my kids and they me. It's refreshing for people to be honest - and it's true in your final comment: Regardless of what parents do or don't do...at the end of the day we become the person we want to be.

"family responses may aggravate the scene but not wholly create it" (from the NYT article)

That statement contains the heart of the article.

My children had identifiable personality traits from the day they were born. Those traits haven't gone away, they've just become more obvious as the years have gone by. I do what I can to guide them so that those traits become positive forces in their lives, but I can only guide - it is up to them to decide what path they will follow.
